The MOGHUL GARDEN:
The Moghul garden grows tranquilly. It grows within a geometric structure that divides the spaces into little plots. Flowers are planted in perfect order, strictly respecting the distance to their neighbours, to such an extent that they look more like the colour plates of a botanical encyclopaedia. The garden has an almost theoretical air, as if observing each flower individually was its main purpose.
Representations of the Moghul garden, whether embroidered, block printed or on hard stone inlaid with marble, all follow the same logic. Each flowering plant is stylised, but nevertheless finely observed, arranged quite tranquilly in an open space that is occasionally interrupted by a tiny cloud in the Chinese style.
Our “Moghul garden” motifs respect the rules of the genre. They simply retain the shading, but the stylisation is slightly more exaggerated, almost a diagram. The subject is treated lightly. The plants are carefully laid out in serried ranks at the bottom or in beds, with no unruly elements – everything exudes calm.
