| I stem from a family of sailors, so the mountain is the beautiful unknown for me. But the hazards of life have led me to skirt along the Himalayas on several occasions. I say skirt along, because they are very difficult to see from Kathmandu. In vain have I stared wide-eyed at the clouds trying to discern the ridge. A small walk to catch a glimpse of Everest enabled me to see the tip of their nose for a few minutes at dawn… then, the unexpected and even the sublime all of a sudden, when the aeroplane was leaving Nepal, the entire chain of the Himalayas stretched above the clouds, where they were hiding, with the snow scintillating against the sun ... |
