The answer is complex, a veritable weave of contradictions in which I daily try to pursue my choices to their logical conclusions. Craft production is one of the great immutables, because faced with the standardisation and generalisation of industrial products that populate our daily lives, I treasure the unsettling irregularities, the tiny defects, the all too human errors - all the minute differences that identify each object. There are also thematic and historical references, transcending the material aspects and giving each object a sense and a provenance; its own history. Although I may well be a "material girl", fussing about the comfort and performance of materials, I also need the spiritual comfort of playfulness and imagination. Because without spiritual comfort, there is no material comfort. |
