I then discovered some marvellous "pieces", and I use the term "pieces" deliberately, because I had never been able to integrate them materially into my world, and an ancient reflex based on ideas of hygiene too obscure to be subdued were probably a contributing factor. And then, suddenly, I started to like rugs. I suppose I was mature enough to appreciate the softness underfoot, a little warmth to protect against cold floors, the quietness of muffled footsteps. I also believe that the serenity of Buddhism, so much at home in the foothills of the formidable Himalayas, brushed off on me without my noticing it during a visit to a weaving workshop in Kathmandu , taking me over and forcing me off my personal beaten track. |
