“LA MONTAGNE”:
I come from a lineage of sailors, so the mountains remain a beautiful stranger to me.
But life’s twists and turns have led me to encounter the Himalayas on several occasions.
I say encounter them because they are difficult to see from Kathmandu.
I stared in vain, looking up at the clouds, trying to discern the ridgeline.
A walk to glimpse Everest only allowed me to see the tip of it for a few minutes at dawn… and then,
suddenly, unexpectedly and sublimely, as the plane left Nepal, the entire Himalayan range unfolded above cloud level,
where it had been hiding, snow glistening in the high-altitude sunlight.
This kind of experience, mixed with the stories of death and disappearance spread by mountaineers, as well as by sailors,
didn’t make the mountains any less mysterious to me! I was barely in a slightly more familiar country,
and always on the edge, never truly at the heart of the landscape.
In Vietnam, too, the mountains remain distant; they look so much like a Chinese painting that they are seen
more as magnificent shapes placed seamlessly on the horizontal surface of the water or rice fields, and always
in distant contemplation. But the vision calms down; far from the terrible Himalayas, nothing hostile remains.
Yet the mystery remains.
