I paint the tiles by hand alone, because it is a practice that is between art and craftsmanship,
like a kind of calligraphy whose writing is identifiable and unique.

A practice that I probably inherited since my parents created these tiles in 1947
for the bar of the Hotel Métropole in Brussels.

This is a creation that must remain spontaneous, there is no prior identification
but a free interpretation on the basis of a very schematic project.
And it must stay like that, so that the pleasure of painting it remains because it can always be seen in the result.
We are therefore far from factory assembly line work … and mass production.

Since my childhood, up to a large decor created today
for the Amadeus in Brussels, …

… I pursue, as soon as I have the time, the same chimeras …

… sometimes inspired by Delft tiles …

…or by imaginary seabed, …

… or even by the wise and automatic gesture of a worker who paints plates, …

… finally so close to my calligraphic impulses. …

In short, ready to go wherever my imagination and the pleasure of holding a brush in my hand take me.
